American Idol Extra is showcased on DIRECTV channel 101 weekly throughout the 2006 American Idol season, since March 16, 2006 and airs at 8 p.m. EST. The show airs every hour, on the hour, Fridays and Saturdays, leading up to that week's debut episode of CD USA, an exclusive weekly music series DIRECT TV satellite TV launched back in January.

American Idol Extra is the first-ever series to expose the backstage drama of what really happens on American Idol after the weekly vote-off show on FOX. American Idol Extra will provide the latest up-to-date news and gossip on the viewers' favorite American Idol contestants and hosts.

In addition to an interview with that week's voted-off finalist, American Idol Extra will also take a retrospective look back at the finalist’s journey from tryout to one of the top 12 spots. The show will also offer a number of behind-the-scenes features including visits with several of the past season's finalists to get an update on their lives and reactions on performances from contestants voted off earlier in the current season.
