| XM Satellite Radio, the nation's leading Satellite Radio service with more than 6.89 million subscribers, recently announced that XM NavTraffic, the first nationwide satellite traffic information service for GPS navigation systems, will launch in 13 additional U.S. metro markets during the third quarter of 2006. This latest expansion brings the award-winning real-time traffic data service to 44 major U.S. markets, coast-to-coast.
XM NavTraffic delivers real-time traffic information to vehicle navigation systems. The driver can see current traffic conditions on the navigation screen, such as traffic speeds, accident locations, and road closings. Accidents and road construction are identified on the map by icons, alerting users to potential blockages up ahead and allowing the driver to route around a jam before getting caught in traffic. In markets where the data is available, XM NavTraffic also provides an overlay of color-coded traffic flow information, indicating how fast the traffic is currently moving on the driver's chosen route. Traffic data is aggregated by NAVTEQ Traffic digital map information from multiple data sources, including police and emergency services, commercial traffic data providers, road sensors, traffic cameras, eyewitness reports, and real-time aircraft surveillance reports.
The XM NavTraffic service is offered as a premium data service for $3.99 per month when packaged with XM Satellite Radio's subscription of $12.95 a month. Selected as the 2005 "Best Consumer Vehicle Application" by leading telematics industry organization Telematics Update, XM NavTraffic is expected to be available in 200,000 NavTraffic-capable vehicles within the next two years.
