HDTV Features

Insatiable demand for high definition programming and an aggressive mandate from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are providing powerful momentum in the transition to HDTV.

Over-the-air digital TV signals are broadcast by over 1175 stations in 205 markets that include 95% of all U.S. TV households. While the goal of an all-digital programming lineup is still a few years away, many of today's most popular prime time programs and sporting events are already broadcast in HDTV in local markets. We've provided this guide to give you an overview of what is available today.

Sports offer particularly compelling content for high definition. The Super Bowl, NFL playoffs, and NBA playoffs were recently broadcast in high definition. Events that will be broadcast in HDTV later this season include the NCAA Final Four, the NHL All-Star Game, the Masters Tournament, and this fall's Monday Night Football to name a few.

Off-Air HDTV Programming
Of the Big Three networks, CBS has been the most aggressive about embracing HDTV, with most of its primetime programming airing in high definition. Among the series available in HDTV this season are: JAG, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Judging Amy, Without A Trace, Robbery Homicide Division, The Agency, Hack, The Guardian, Presidio Med, The Fugitive, Becker, Touched by an Angel, Still Standing, Everybody Loves Raymond, Bram & Alice, Yes Dear, King of Queens, and The Young and the Restless.
ABC is offered a greatly expanded line up of primetime programming during the 2003/2004 season including NYPD Blue, Alias, The Practice, 8 Simple Rules, I'm with Her, According to Jim, Less than Perfect, My Wife and Kids, It's All Relative, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, George Lopez, Married to the Kellys, Hope & Faith, Life with Bonnie, The Wonderful World of Disney and a much larger selection of feature films every month.

NBC broadcasts The Tonight Show, ER, American Dreams, Ed, Crossing Jordan, and Frasier, as well as new primetime series Boomtown, In Laws and Hidden Hills. NBC executives have stated a commitment to producing a more significant portion of its primetime lineup in HD in the near future. Last winter, NBC made headlines through its outstanding coverage of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
FOX does not offer high definition programming at this time, but will soon be transitioning its FOX WIDESCREENTM programming to FOX HD later this year.
Warner Brothers has dramatically increased its level of HDTV programming this season with a sponsorship from RCA and some very hot original series. Series offered in high definition this season include Reba, Everwood, Smallville, Angel, Tarzan, Gilmore Girls, and What I Like About You
From early on, PBS has supported HD broadcasting and currently airs documentaries, specials, and performances via select affiliates in many parts of the country.
